    Description

This is a Vintage 1950s or 1960s Banthrico 1915 Chevy Roadster
Metal Car Coin Bank Promotion for Ipswich Savings Bank.
Ipswich Savings Bank was established in 1869 in Ipswich, MA. It
changed its name to IpswichBank in 1997 and was acquired by
    TD Bank in 2002.
The car is cast of White Metal in an Antique Brass finish. It has
aluminum wheels on a steel axle that turn. The bottom is steel
with a keyed trap door. Don't have the key, but a bent heavy duty
paper clip can be used to pick the lock. I will leave the trap door
open when I ship it. Below is a little history of Banthrico, Inc.:
Banthrico, Inc., a Chicago, Illinois firm, started life as Banker's Thrift
Corporation in 1914. Jerome Aronson and Joseph Eisendrath purchased
the company in 1931 and renamed the company Banthrico. It became to
be known as "The Coin Bank People." Banthrico's staff, of roughly 75
highly skilled employees, had crafted over 900 varieties of monetary
storage molds through the ensuing decades. Within that list were modes
of transportation, including the automobile. The automobile banks were
hand-cast using White Metal (95 percent zinc, 5 percent aluminum and
traces of lead, brass and copper). Molds were poured individually and
imperfections were removed with a belt sander and buffing wheel. Banks
were then colored through an electroplating process and a clear lacquer
finish was applied. The most popular finishes were pewter and antique
brass. Each bank featured a keyed trap door and coin slot on the underside.
Banks made after the 1960's did not have keyed doors and were not painted,
instead, they had a brushed finish.
The car is 5 1/4" long, 2 5/8" wide and 3 1/4" tall at the high point. It weighs
15.6 Oz. Guessing the scale to be 1:24.
