Description
Of these two Land Rovers depicted above, which one would you expect needs more work done? You may be surprised to learn that the blue vehicle needed
VASTLY
more work than the white one. The blue vehicle was bought for about ,000 and required ,000 in repairs to fix the problems it had. We did the work for an East-Coast client after the seller, a “Land-Rover Specialist” from the deep South grossly over-advertised the truck. The white one, however, has already been mechanically restored, top to bottom, and needs no repairs whatever, despite the rough look of the exterior.
A
very
large percentage of vintage Land-Rovers advertisements are
enormously
exaggerated and/or misrepresented.
For more than 50 years my restoration shop has processed dozens of ‘fully-restored’ Land-Rovers, ‘rebuilt’ Land-Rovers, and ‘professionally-restored’ (Series) Land-Rovers, a significant percentage of which have required many times their purchase price to rescue them from the edge of the abyss. An oft-heard comment within these walls is, “I made a huge mistake because I didn’t have a clue what I was doing!”
The tales are legion, and regrettable, but unnecessary. Save yourself thousands….even tens of thousands having to redo work that was done poorly….even dangerously. Or not done at all. Dubious-quality parts. Appalling, uninformed, unenlightened workmanship. Incorrect parts. Cheap material. Any of these can undermine your Land-Rover dream.
As the director of restorations for my company I bring 50+ years’ experience to the table. Experience you can benefit from. Consider this: In my professional career I have observed over the past 35 years : 1. A virtualy endless parade of deficient or severely-deficient Series Land-Rovers coming through our workshops. 2.
That poor workmanship is common.
3.That approximately 4 in 10 Series Land-Rovers I appraise have demonstrably negative value. 4. That I flunk 8 out of 10 Series Land-Rovers I evaluate. 5. That fully 8 out of 10 Series Land-Rovers evaluated have deficient, spurious or dangerously defective parts fitted. 6. That the majority of Series Land-Rovers we process lack a viable paper history, either for parts bought, or for professional repairs, or both. 7.That many advertising claims are non-verifiable, overblown, inaccurate or outright fraudulent. 8.
It is also my experience that at least 5 of every 10 Series Land-Rovers that we see have repair needs that exceed the cost of the vehicle.
